Long Live the King and Our Battle: Chasing Narratives in the Archive of the Indies in Seville, Spain presented by Kim Morse, Professor History.

In 2010 during a Sweet Sabbatical spent (in part) in the Archive of the Indies in Seville, Spain, I found a tasty morsel, an Indigenous revolt in San Matheo, Venezuela in 1757. I knew it was complicated then, and I knew there was so much more I needed to learn to understand it. Using published primary sources in subsequent years I determined that the revolt, most likely, was one of a series of events that undid the authority of the Franciscans in eastern Venquela, making Indigenous more vulnerable in Spanish exploitation. Last fall I had the opportunity to spend a month at the AGI during a sabbatical. As I delved even more deeply into the archives, well, what I thought was complicated became that much more. I will give a paper that explores some of the questions derived from one small piece of the 1757 revolt. Along the way we can talk about narratives, the squishy-ness of history, and why it all matters.
