Historical Film Nights presents an offering for our WUmester theme of Community and Belonging - Barbarosa (1982). 'The Outlaw. 'The Outcast...and the Legend that was bigger than both of them.

When we think of community and belonging, we often begin with family. But how does that change when your family is trying to kill you? That is the plight shared by both the outlaw Barbarosa (played by county-music legend Willie Nelson) and his accidental sidekick Karl (Gary Busey) in Fred Schepisi's Barbarosa. Meanwhile, on the film-making side: how does an Australian making his American film debut choose to make his mark in the Hollywood community? By choosing for his first project that most American of genres, a Western: a picaresque tale of the mythic west set in the arid Texas borderlands. That proved to be a problematic choice, but the result, this cult classic, still delights.
