Tracking an African Civil War: Sudan, Spring 2023 by Tom Prasch, Professor of History.

I was mid-semester in teaching Modern African History when, in mid-April, civil war broke out in Sudan. This led to a pivot from the more usual tracking of current events done in the class to a more focused day-by-day tracking of the progress of the civil war, which provided insight into both the process of state breakdown in postcolonial Africa and, in press coverage, the ways in which the world notices such events. This presentation will offer some basic background on Sudance history, and account of the course of the war, and a set of broader conclusions about the place of Sudan's civil war in the range of contemporary conflicts in Africa.
