This month's Historical Film Nights features a 50th anniversary screening of Peter Bogdanovich's "Paper Moon" (1973), the film that made 10-year-old Tatum O'Neil the youngest person to receive a competitive Oscar (for Best Supporting Actress; her dad, Ryan, got a Golden Globe for playing her father in the film, but was bypassed for Oscar nominations). The picaresque adventures of a grifter-ish dad-and-daughter team working their way across Depression-era Kansas features location shooting in Kansas locales like Wilson, Gorham, White Cloud, and Hays. Roger Ebert celebrated it as "a period piece that uses generic conventions only when they apply, so that we see the Depression through the eyes of characters who are allowed to be individuals."
