Film screening of "Vera Drake" (2004), Mike Leigh's moving film about a deeply maternal working-class woman who, amid much other community work, secretly provided abortions for women in 1950s England, when the procedure was illegal. Leigh is less focused on politics and ideology, however, than on humanity: his film aims to humanize and to understand Vera Drake, the women she served, and even the police officer who arrests her. For Leigh, the issue is not so much about the law as about the social conditions of the time.
